Carrol Krause used to be a journalist in the daily newspaper Herald-Times serving Bloomington, Indiana. However, she retired from her career in 2004 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her blog ‘Stories by Carrol’ was written right before she passed away in February, and speaks about the best and the worst that was happening to her in the last days of her life.
Several months ago, Carol began having digestive problems so she wasn’t able to eat normal food. She writes that although the hospice had the best intentions, they fed dying people with this horrible stuff which is not a real food.
The stuff she got from the hospice were Ensure products: shakes, pudding, and a drink that was supposed to be an apple juice. The nutritional value of these chemical-laden “stuff” is the same as that of most commercial junk food, and their drinks are supposed to be nutritional lifeline for extremely sick people.
The big food corporation pretending to be a healthy alternative, Abbott Nutrition, owns Ensure. The worst part is that the company has close ties to the medical industry, which is why their products can be found in almost every hospital. This is really sad as their “meals” are intended for patients who try to restore their health.
The Truth about ‘Ensure’
Ensure is a brand by Abbott that makes medical “nutritional shakes and drinks.” It makes big claims to customers such as “#1 Doctor Recommended” and “Worldwide Leader in Nutritional Science” but in reality their products are as far away from a healthy meal as you can get. Sadly, these products are often given to patients in extremely poor health, who need proper nutrition the most. Instead, when consuming these products they are receiving the following: preservatives, fillers, and chemicals.
To make matters worse, Abbott Nutrition is a member of the notorious pro-GMO organization the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and to date has given nearly a million dollars to fight against GMO labeling in the United States.
Does this sound like the type of company whose products you should be feeding your loved ones? After you see these products and their ingredients you’ll have the answer.
Ensure Clear™ Therapeutic Nutrition
Even though the front of the package portrays an orange and an apple to it, there is no apple in the juice. Instead, this concoction is made of water and sugar. It also contains corn syrup solids, which are made by using dehydrated corn syrup. This means that it is made from GMO corn, which has been linked to cancer and diabetes.
This therapeutic nutrition drink also contains cupric sulfate, a toxic pesticide which is associated with itching, eczema, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach, brain, kidney and liver damage. Plus, it is dangerous to the environment.
Chromium chloride is yet another ingredient of this drink. In fact, it is a toxic chemical which negatively affects the stomach and the reproductive system.
Speaking of vitamins, it is important to mention that this drink still contains some. However, the problem is that they are not genuine vitamins, but synthetic versions instead. They are made using chemicals and the body is not able to absorb them the same way it does with genuine ones.
Pesticides, Chemicals, and Toxins
The content of Corn Syrup Solids consists of dehydrated corn syrup, which is 100 percent glucose. This form of sugar increases the risk of obesity. In almost all cases, corn syrup is produced from GMO corn, and has been associated with cancer and diabetes.
Cupric sulfate is in fact a toxic fungicide and pesticide which can cause anemia, gastrointestinal problems, and high doses of it can cause even death. It might also cause mutation of cells as a result of genetic damage (genotoxic).
The toxic chromium chloride negatively influences both, man and woman’s reproductive system. It can cause ulcers, abnormal bleeding, and stomach problems.
Although The Environmental Protection Agency has classified sodium selenite as dangerous, this toxic ingredient which is byproduct of copper refining is usually labeled as nutrient.
Natural and Artificial Flavors may include harmful-to-death chemicals which are often derived from inorganic sources. They contribute to an ill organism and to the development of cancer.
While our bodies, especially when sick, do require a lot of vitamins, there is a huge difference between natural vitamins derived from food or natural sources, versus synthetic vitamins. Unfortunately, the vitamins contained in Ensure products and other commercialized “health” foods and supplements are almost always synthetic, and are manufactured with chemicals.
Generally speaking, when a new study comes out that claims that some vitamin is toxic at high levels, it is because only the synthetic version of it has been studied, yet it gets lumped together with natural vitamins.
Synthetics do not get absorbed by the body in the same way as natural vitamins, because they have been “isolated” – they are separated from the entire vitamin complex and trace minerals and enzymes. What a synthetic vitamin is lacking, the body tries to make up for by itself, and depletes its existing nutrients in the process, as explained by Organic Consumers.
“This process results in an overall negative health effect while minimizing any gains that could have been achieved by the supplement,” according to “Nutri-Con: The Truth about Vitamins & Supplements” report by The Hippocrates Health Institute.
– The synthetic version of Vitamin E-Dl-alpha-tocopherol acetate. It provides only 12 percent effectiveness of the natural vitamin E, and it is usually obtained as a byproduct of a manufacturing process dependent on petrochemical. This synthetic vitamin is linked to an increased risk of DNA damage, hemorrhagic stroke, etc.
– Synthetic kind of iron-Ferrous sulfate. It can cause nausea, constipation, gastrointestinal issues, and allergic reactions.
– Synthetic kind of vitamin B3- Niacinamide. It has numerous side effects including liver failure.
– Manganese sulfate. The reaction between sulfuric acid and manganese oxide produces manganese sulfate. It is usually used in fertilizers and fungicides, paints and varnishes, and ceramic, along with medicines.
– Synthetic version of vitamin B5-Calcium Pantothenate. Derived from pantothenic acid.
– Synthetic kind of vitamin A– Vitamin A Palmitate. It can cause stomach issues and liver damage.
– Zinc Sulfate. It is an organic form of zinc which besides being dangerous to the environment, it can be toxic to cells.
– Chemical version of sodium-Sodium molybdate. It has proven to affect negatively on the fertility in animals.
More synthetic vitamins included as ingredients are: Citric Acid, Whey Protein Isolate (probably from GMO corn-fed cows), a synthetic kind of vitamin C-Ascorbic Acid (often inorganic and difficult for digestion), Biotin, Folic Acid, and Vitamin D3.
Keep in mind that these ingredients are included in one of the top Ensure’s products, which clearly is nutritionally worthless in comparison to real food.
Carrol’s Call to Action
In September 2015, Carol wrote in her blog that the “swill” from Hospice is really vile, and nothing but a collection of sugars, starches, nutritional powders, and artificial flavors all mixed into water. She states that those who can’t make a difference between real and fake food, might not object consuming products from Ensure, but she knows what a real and healthy food is, so she asks for a support.
Carol wrote that she wouldn’t feed this horrible swill even to a dying animal, and she likes us to use social media to grab hospital management’s attention about this huge problem. She encourages a fight for a proper and decent food.
