Essential oils have become all the rage over the past few years. This is not surprising as they provide numerous health benefits, such as boosting mood, managing stress, fighting off infections, and relieving pain. Therapeutic grade essential oils are distilled from the flowers, leaves, or bark of a plant and provide both physical and psychological benefits. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, indicated thyme`s therapeutic uses in treating respiratory issues.
Thyme essential oil is known to man as one of the strongest antioxidant. It supports the respiratory, nervous, immune, digestive and other body systems. This essential oil contains large amounts of thymol. It is one of the naturally occurring compound known as “biocides”. They are substances that can eliminate dangerous organisms.
Yet, did you know that essential oils can be a powerful remedy for cancer?
Thyme essential oil can destroy up to 97 percent of breast cancer cells
This aromatic herb grows in the Mediterranean, and it was Greeks’ favorite spice. Thyme is one of the main ingredients in Mediterranean cuisine. This is probably the reason why Greek women are less likely to develop breast cancer, and the number of cancer patients is twice as lower as the number of women with breast cancer in the US.
A team of researchers at Celal Bayar University in Turkey conducted a study to find out how Wild Thyme affects breast cancer activity.
The results of the study were published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer, indicating that Wild Thyme induced cell death in breast cancer cells.
It has been found that thyme essential oil kills 98 percent of human breast cancer in vitro after only 72 hours of treatment. This was at a concentration of 0.05 percent, while at 0.01 percent; thyme essential oil killed 40 percent of the cells. Other studies on thyme have shown that it works against ovarian and oral cancer.
Thyme essential oil was proven to be the most powerful at killing cancer cells. In other studies, thyme has also shown activity against oral and ovarian cancer. Thyme, or its essential oil, has also been used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine owing to its strong antioxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal (potently killing yeast such as Candida) properties. It makes a great addition to a healthy diet focused on organic fruits, vegetables and whole foods and can be used as a flavorful herb in cooking or simply prepared as a tea.
