The next time you talk to yourself, say:
-“It’s okay, this just means that I’m a genius!”
When we talk to ourselves, we aren’t going crazy, but our brains are using speech to help us process information.
DO YOU TALK TO YOURSELF? HERE’S WHY IT MIGHT MEAN YOU’RE A GENIUS
TALKING TO YOURSELF HELPS MEMORY
The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology made a study that resulted in a conclusion that self-directed speech helps people who are looking specific object surrounded with other items.
Saying loud the name of the item helped participants to find the object more accurately than if they didn’t.
It means that if you talk to yourself you will process visual information better,just like chess players who have to remember the positions and plan for the possible future strategies of their opponent and themselves. That is a lot of visual information to remember, and by talking to themselves they manage to recall the important details.
If you do talk to yourself don’t stop doing it because another research has shown that suppressing it to yourself will hurt your ability to switch between tasks.
Multitask is important for our modern lives, so if talking to yourself helps you need to do it.
Like a computer, the brain has long-term storage memory and a current processing memory. Talking to yourself helps your so called current working memory.
TALKING TO YOURSELF HELPS REGULATE EMOTIONS
Talking to yourself helps in managing your emotions so instead of getting furious when something is wrong , you can rationalize the reasons and talk through possible solutions .
People who talk to themselves can stay positive more easily than those who do not talk to themselves. Negative attitudes can be programmed into us from our childhood and we can lose faith in ourselves .
Positive people use self-talk to overcome that negative outlook .
When you learn to rely on yourself you get bigger self-esteem and you act as your own best friend, guiding your thoughts and encouraging yourself along the way.
TALKING TO YOURSELF HELPS CONCENTRATION
Talking to yourself can help you to concentrate and focus on things more clearly. Just like how self-talk can help you multitask, talking to yourself can also help with maintaining focus on a task for a sustained period of time.
When you talk to yourself, you are able to focus your attention on what needs to be done. Your goals become clear as you talk to yourself while performing a task. By focusing on the sound of your own voice, you are able to mentally remove the distractions around you.
HOW TO START TALKING TO YOURSELF
* Ask yourself questions.
Ask questions like:
– “Will I be successful?” and then answer : – “Yes, of course, I will be successful.”
Your confidence in yourself is infectious.
* Give yourself instructions.
Tell yourself what is your first step, then the next and so on.
* Give yourself encouragement.
Say: – “Yes, you’ve got this,” or
-“That looks great. I knew you could do it!”
* Block negative self-talk.
Forget the words like: – “I’ll never be able to do this right,” And say
– “Stop” back to yourself.
* Focus on positives.
Instead of being afraid and saying : – “Don’t mess this up” which focuses on bad outcome , say
-“You’ll do just fine” which is more positive language.
* Forgive yourself.
Making mistakes is human so forgive yourself by saying:
– “It’s okay, you didn’t do that intentionally.”
