Honey is one of the healthiest ingredients you can find, beneficial for treating numerous diseases and health problems.
However, you have to learn the difference between genuine and artificial honey, which is usually sold in supermarkets. We are all fans of buying cheap and healthy, but with honey that is not the case.
You may be even surprised when you learn how expensive natural honey is, but that is actually where all health benefits are.
Cheaper versions of honey may be practical, but it means that this honey has been fabricated. In this process, it has lost some important qualities and its effects are not the same.
According to the FDA, the food safety divisions of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Commission (EU) as well as numerous other regulating bodies, in order for honey to be considered REAL, it must contain pollen.
Without the presence of pollen, the FDA cannot conclude whether the honey is from legitimate and/or safe sources.
And most, if not all, of the commercial honey sold in supermarkets, are ultra-filtered, a process that includes heating the honey to high temperatures that kill off any beneficial nutrients and enzymes, adding water to dilute it, and then filtering it using high-pressure technology to remove any pollen.
According to one public study, carried out by the Food Safety News, almost 76% of all honey brands available have undergone a process called ultra-filtration.
During this filtration the honey wax is removed along with the pollen.
According to the manufacturers, the filtration process is necessary to prevent crystallizing and extend the shelf life of the product. However, customers do not know that actually, pollen is very important and provide a lot of benefits to our bodies.
Researchers discover that the filtration process makes it hard to determine the geographical origin of the honey. For this reason, they advise to avoid this kind of honey as in case of pollen contamination, it is important to trace and analyze the origin of the honey.
For instance, Chinese honey often contaminated with illegal antibiotics and even some metal because the producers process honey with the filtration process to import it and its origin become unknown.
How to Recognize Fake Honey:
– If your honey does not “crystallize” over time, there is a good chance it may be adulterated, since the pure one will crystallize when kept in the fridge. – Always read the labels: Always read the label on the honey, and if it contains commercial glucose or high fructose corn syrup, avoid it. – Add a few iodine drops into a glass of water and add in some honey afterwards. If your honey turns a blue colour it has been combined with corn starch. – Add a couple of drops of vinegar into a mixture of water with honey. If you see foam, your honey has been adulterated with plaster. – Place a dab of honey on the end of a matchstick and light it. If it ignites, it is pure.
– Add a spoon of honey into a glass of water. If the honey dissolves in water, means it’s a fake or poor quality honey. Pure honey does not dissolve in water.
You can avoid purchasing adulterated honey by using the guideline above. Remember that in order to take most benefit of honey, you need to buy a pure one that still contain pollen.
