To some, a ketogenic diet amounts to nothing less than a drug-free cancer treatment. The diet calls for eliminating carbohydrates, replacing them with healthy fats and protein.
The premise is that since cancer cells need glucose to thrive, and carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body, then cutting out carbs literally starves the cancer cells.
This type of diet, in which you replace carbs with moderate amounts of high-quality protein and high amounts of beneficial fat, is what I recommend for everyone, whether you have cancer or not. It’s simply a diet that will help optimize your weight and health overall, as eating this way will help you convert from carb burning mode to fat burning.
Ketogenic Diet Might Be Solution to Brain Cancer Recovery
In the video below, Professor Thomas Seyfried, Ph.D., one of the leaders of the search for nutritional treatment of cancer, discusses how malignant brain cancer, as a metabolic disorder which includes dysregulation of respiration, can be controlled through modifications of the metabolic environment.
When the levels of glucose are lowered, malignant brain tumors mainly depend on substrate level phosphorylation (non-oxidative) because of functional and structural abnormalities in mitochondria. The biggest fuels for malignant cancer cells are glucose and glutamine. Glucose transition to ketone bodies as a source of energy is an adaptation to the deprivation of food which allows the normal cells to survive in extreme changes in the nutritional environment.
Professor Seyfried says that their suggestion is the different method to the management of brain cancer which utilizes the normal cells’ metabolic flexibility at the expense of the metabolically challenged and genetically defective ones. This metabolic and evolutionary method of managing brain cancer is supported by case studies in patients, and studies in orthotopic mouse brain tumor.R-KD (restricted ketogenic diets) and calorie restriction lower the levels of circulating glucose and increase the levels of ketone, and they are pro-apoptotic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-invasive towards malignant brain cancer.
Current conventional cancer treatment typically involves chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy is a cytotoxic poison, and radiation is devastating to the human body. More often than not, the treatment is what eventually kills the patient. This can no longer be accepted as “the best we can do,” says Dr. Seyfried and also says that there have to be changes in the standard of care if we want to see major progress.
Ketogenic Diet/Metabolic therapy Investigated as Treatment of Cancer
An article concerning the ketogenic diet was published by CBN News not so long ago. It is obvious that a lot of people have understood that the so far efforts of conventional medicine in the fight against cancer are just not working, which is why conventional medicine mustn’t proceed the same way. It is astounding that cancer can be affected by diet alone.
The greatest accomplishment of Dr. Fred Hatfield, who’s extremely successful author and millionaire businessman, is the fact that he succeeded to destroy his widespread metastatic cancer in his skeletal structure in the nick of time, despite the assumptions of many doctors that he will live just 3 more months. Having nothing to lose, when Dr. Hatfield heard about the metabolic therapy or ketogenic diet, he decided to give it a try. His cancer completely disappeared. You can see his interview in the video below.
Another doctor included in the video is Dr. Dominic D’Agostino. Together with a team of researchers, he studies ketogenic diet, metabolic therapy, at the University of South Florida. What they discovered is that lab animals which were given a carb-free diet, have better survived the extremely aggressive metastatic cancer as oppose to the animals which were receiving chemotherapy treatment.
As CBN reports, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino and his team drastically elevated the survival with metabolic therapy. He further says that he witnessed success not only in lab mice but also in a lot of people. He shares the encouraging fact that he had a connection with dozens of people in the last two years who oddly enough are still alive.
The Way Ketogenic Diet Starve Cancer Cells
The ketogenic diet has a rapid and dramatic effect on cancer, and Dr. D’Agostino explains this in the following way. Glucose fuels our body cells, including cancer cells. But in contrast to normal cells, cancer cells don’t have metabolic flexibility and can’t adjust to using ketone bodies as a fuel. Once we change your diet to “fat-adapted”, our body begins fueling with fat rather than carbs. Switching carbs for healthy fats will cause starving of the cancer cells since we are no more supplying glucose, which is a necessary fuel for their development.
Normal cells in our body have metabolic flexibility to adapt to the new fuel, ketone bodies, instead of glucose. However, Dr. D’Agostino explains that since cancer cells don’t have the same metabolic flexibility, researchers can try to find out more about it. The first and most important thing are to eliminate fructose/sugar and carbohydrates (grains) from your diet in order to starve the cancer cells. This change in your diet is the primary one to make if you want any other dietary and preventive strategy to succeed.
Insulin and leptin levels are also increased by carbs, which is important if you want to protect yourself from all chronic diseases, including cancer. The only fats we should strictly avoid are trans fats, which may be included in processed foods which are otherwise loaded with omega-6 fats.
Another thing which will increase the proliferation of cancer cells is increasing the omega-6 to omega-3 fats ratio.
Dr. Rosedale was one of Dr. Mercola’s primary mentors in the importance of leptin and insulin. He was among the first people to advocate both moderate protein and a low carb diet, which was contrary of what other professionals advocated-carbs replaced by high proteins. The healthiest option to those challenged with cancer is replacing carbs with beneficial fats, and limiting the sources of protein only to high quality pastured/organic. The recommended daily amount of protein according to Dr. Rosedale is 50 grams (0.5 gr per pound of lean body weight).
The ketogenic diet allows reducing carbs to extremely low levels, however, our body must have some daily protein to replace its’ requirements. The solution is to include healthy fat to replace the excess protein and carbs.
– Coconuts and coconut oil – Avocados – Olives and olive oil – Organic raw nuts, particularly macadamia nuts – Butter produced from raw grass-fed organic milk
– Organic pastured meat and egg yolks
The Misconception of Carbs and Fats
In the new book of Dr. Robert Lustig, who’s another expert on the high carb diet’s dangers, “Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease”, he speaks about the fat myths which are endangering millions of people. The number of people who have followed conventional recommendations of the low-fat diet, which caused poor health, is probably very high. There are still some nutritionists, doctors, and government health officials who give completely wrong dietary advices.
The fact is that you’ve been thoroughly misled when it comes to dietary advice. Still today, many doctors, nutritionists, and government health officials will tell you to avoid saturated fat and keep fat consumption to below 10 percent while keeping the bulk of your diet, about 60 percent, as carbs. This is madness, as it’s the converse of a diet that will lead to optimal health. As an example, you’ve probably seen the whole grain label, which is certified by the American Heart Association3 of all things. Do whole grains support heart health? Hardly. The following outtake from the transcript addresses this head on:
Flatow mentions the whole grain stamp, industry standard which is one of the most widely used. He says that according to Harvard, the grain products which bear the stamp contained higher amounts of both calories and sugars than those products without the stamp. As Lustig confirms this, he explains that wholegrain actually doesn’t have much meaning. He tells that pulverized whole grain with added sugar is still a whole grain, with the difference that it loses all the benefits from whole grain the moment it’s pulverized.
Additional Lifestyle Factors which Affect Your Cancer
Other lifestyle factors that have been found to have an impact on chronic disease and cancer include:
1. Vitamin D: There’s overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that vitamin D deficiency plays a crucial role in cancer development. You can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels with sun exposure or a safe tanning bed. And, if you are being treated for cancer, it is likely that higher blood levels – probably around 80-90 ng/ml – would be beneficial. To learn the details on how to use vitamin D therapeutically, please review my previous article, Test Values, and Treatment for Vitamin D Deficiency. In terms of protecting against cancer, vitamin D has been found to offer protection in a number of ways, including:
Regulating genetic expression Increasing the self-destruction of mutated cells (which, if allowed to replicate, could lead to cancer) Reducing the spread and reproduction of cancer cells Causing cells to become differentiated (cancer cells often lack differentiation)
Reducing the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones, which is a step in the transition of dormant tumors turning cancerous
2. Getting proper sleep: both in terms of getting enough sleep, and sleeping between certain hours. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the ideal hours for sleep are between 10 pm and 6 am. Modern research has confirmed the value of this recommendation as certain hormonal fluctuations occur throughout the day and night, and if you engage in the appropriate activities during those times, you’re ‘riding the wave’ so to speak, and are able to get the optimal levels. Working against your biology by staying awake when you should ideally be sleeping or vice versa interferes with these hormonal fluctuations.
There’s a spike of melatonin that occurs between midnight and 1am that you don’t want to miss because the consequences are absolutely spectacular. Melatonin is not only a sleep hormone, but it also is a very powerful antioxidant. It decreases the amount of estrogen your body produces and boosts your immune system. It also interacts with other hormones. So, if you go to bed after 10, it can significantly increase your risk of breast cancer.
3. Effectively addressing your stress: The research shows that if you experience a traumatic or highly stressful event, such as a death in the family, your risk of breast cancer is 12 times higher in the ensuing five years. I believe energy psychology tools are ideal to address stressors in your life. My favorite is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), but there are many others available as well.
4. Exercise: If you are like most people, when you think of reducing your risk of cancer, exercise doesn’t immediately come to mind. However, there is some fairly compelling evidence that exercise can slash your risk of cancer.
One of the primary ways exercises lowers your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. Additionally, exercise improves the circulation of immune cells in your blood. Your immune system is your first line of defense against everything from minor illnesses like a cold right up to devastating, life-threatening diseases like cancer.
The trick about exercise, though, is understanding how to use it as a precise tool. This ensures you are getting enough to achieve the benefit, not too much to cause injury, and the right variety to balance your entire physical structure and maintain strength and flexibility, and aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels. This is why it is helpful to view exercise like a drug that needs to be carefully prescribed to achieve its maximum benefit. Additionally, it is likely that integrating exercise with intermittent fasting will greatly catalyze the potential of exercise to reduce your risk of cancer and stimulate widespread healing and rejuvenation.
You CAN Take Control of Your Life
Cancer comes right after heart disease as the second most deadly disease in America. People know that the cancer war is a dismal failure. Unfortunately, conventional medicine is blind in terms of prevention and treatment of cancer, resulting in hundreds of thousands premature deaths every year. Although they don’t appreciate the concepts of this article, you can take control of your own life by knowing better ways of treating cancer.
Overall, the ketogenic diet can be referred as no-grain-carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet, which has returned the health of many people, even though with given aggressive cancer diagnosis and no hope of survival. We hope that Dr. D’Agostino’s research and similar ones will become widely known, but until that happens, research on your own and take your life into your own hands.
Severely limiting sugar/fructose, processed foods of all kinds, sweetened beverages (as well as diet versions), and replacing carbs with healthy fats and high quality protein can do what no medicine can – it can prevent disease from setting in, and may even be the U-turn you’re looking for if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer or other chronic diseases. Add to that appropriate sun exposure, sleep, effective stress management, and regular exercise, and you’ll be well ahead of the rest of the population.
