The Difference Between Baking Soda and Baking Powder – Healthy Food And Sport Tips

Many people are wondering the same thing, what’s the difference between baking soda and baking powder, which one is used when, how to use their combination and the like.

Baking soda has only one ingredient: sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is a base that reacts when it comes into contact with acids, like buttermilk, yogurt or vinegar.

Thus, it starts rising the dough and butter after it is added to it. Moreover, it is used to spread.

Baking soda is used in cookies, pancakes, naan ( Indian bread), and you can also add baking powder in naan, BHA Tura (Indian Bread).

Sometimes, your recipes get a bitter taste, and this means that you have added too much baking soda. Therefore, read the recipe carefully and use only the needed quantity. A bit of baking soda can also add a brownish color to your cakes and cookies.

Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and a dry acid, such as cream of tartar, and perhaps some corn starch to help keep the two separate and dry. Most baking powders on the market are “double acting”, meaning that some leavening occurs the minute the baking powder gets wet, and the rest of the leavening occurs when it is heated.

Since baking powder already contains an acid to neutralize its baking soda, it is most often used when a recipe does not call for an additional acidic ingredient.

Baking powder is added to cakes to raise them, as well as in other recipes which do not involve an acidic nature- ingredients such as lemon juice, curd or vinegar. Baking powder is often used to raise the cake while it is heating.

These two cane combined in order to make the cake rise.
